So, there they were at Memorial Stadium pointing out the similarities between this structure and the Roman Coliseum. Kevin Clark, an architect in our parish, was with the second graders elaborating on the columns and the structure. Sister Teresa Marie was exploring further down, aware that at any moment someone might say, “Hey what are you doing in here? You should leave now….” So, she proceeded with hesitation. Then came the lady in all red with a big contrasting white N proudly displayed, but her face didn’t look like they were going to get thrown out. She exclaimed, “Welcome! You must be here for the birthday party!”
Sister responded considerably less enthusiastically, “I don’t think we were invited.”
The red lady said, “Oh, yes, you are invited! Would you like cupcakes, cookies, or cake?”
Sister responded, “Are you sure that’s OK?” looking at the 35 students behind her.
The red lady said, “Is it OK for your kids to have that?”
So, then the party began. The students walked down the red carpet to royal treatment. There were cupcakes guaranteed to make your face red, games on the astroturf, field goal attempts, all to the enjoyment of not only the children but all present.
The surprise birthday portion was sandwiched between making connections with Roman culture and architecture and experiencing the beauty of the Newman Center Chapel. They concluded with another wonder provoking visit to the Wesleyan Planetarium with another parishioner, Dr. Nathaniel Cunningham, presenting. What a field trip it was!
What surprises does the Lord have in store for us today? May we find the little ones and the big ones and may they bring joy to our hearts.
