Are there any Frog and Toad fans out there? One of their funny stories involves Frog and Toad trying not to eat cookies. At first, they try to hide them or put them somewhere out of reach. They really only find success when Frog finally takes the cookies outside and lets the birds eat them up. He satisfactorily declares, "We have lots and lots of will power!" (After which, Toad declares he is going home to bake a cake.)
When I don't have something right in front of me, I can easily forget it. This can be a good thing. Take, for example, candy and sweets during Lent. If they're not around, I have no problem giving them up. The tricky part is when they are around me. Then, something I wouldn't have even given thought to before is suddenly drawing my mind or heart!
Let's take a different slant on the phrase, "out of sight, out of mind." Does it ever affect us negatively? For example, if I do not have Jesus in sight, do I more easily forget Him? If I am not reading spiritually uplifting books or articles, does my intellect grow dulled, or drawn to more passing things? Or if I neglect to visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, does my heart grow lukewarm toward Him?
Perhaps, in order to keep our minds and hearts on the things of Heaven, we need to keep Jesus IN sight and IN mind. In this final week of Lent, may He be in our sight, in our mind, and in our heart.
