Happy Birthday, Mary! Although this year it was on a Sunday, we traditionally celebrate the birth of our Blessed Mother on September 8th. Many of the teachers observed this celebration in their classrooms.
The fourth graders studied an image of St. Anne holding Mary and discussed what they saw in the picture, as well as what it would have been like for St. Anne to teach Mary about God.
Each of the third graders had a chance to write a letter to Mary, which they then presented to her and individually spent a few moments in prayer before her image. These are a few of their prayers:
"You know everything I do. Please help me to be more like your Son." - Bridget R.
"I will love you forever, even in the hard times." - Andrew M.
"You saw your own son be killed and then resurrect - you are so brave! Thank you so much for being my mother and loving me!" - Sylvie C.
"Thank you for being my eternal mother. I will love you forever!" - Kyler K.
"Thank you SO much for your yes to God, and for bringing Jesus into the world!" - Lily Z.
"You have been a great mother to me. I hope I get to meet you in heaven someday." - Emmet T.
"Help me be holy and protect me." - Adeline S.
"Mary, guide me to the truth, and teach me the virtues." - AnnMarie M.
"Thank you for being our spiritual mother." - Eliana G.
"Thank you for saying yes to Jesus." - Darel S.
"Thank you for being our queen. I love you so much!" - Daniel T.
In Miss Becher's 3B classroom, she brought cookies to share. One of the students remarked, "These cookies must be straight from Mary in heaven, they're so good!"
In the Kindergarten classrooms, they also made cards and sang Happy Birthday to Mary. As one girl brought up her card to Mary, she blew her a kiss!
May we learn from the simple piety and devotion of these children and have a childlike love for our Blessed Mother.
