Christ Before Pilate by Nikolai Nikolaevich Ge (1831 – 1894) (public domain)
This year, for the Solemnity of Christ the King, the Gospel will be that of Christ before Pilate. What a mystery that Jesus, who is our all-powerful God, empties Himself so much to be mocked, crowned with thorns, and interrogated condescendingly by Pilate. Can this truly be our King? Yes! Time and again, Jesus shows us how to live our humanity, by His embracing it so profoundly in Himself.
Whether it's coming as a vulnerable and helpless baby in Bethlehem, experiencing weariness after hours with the people or long travels throughout the countryside, undergoing hunger and thirst, weeping at a friend's death, being falsely accused, or hanging on a cross, Jesus knows what it's like to be human. He also knows the joys of being human: the intimacy of friendship, laughter, a good meal, intellectual discovery, hearing beautiful music, seeing a stunning vista. Yes, this is our King.
Let's take the advice of St. Josemaria Escriva on this subject:
"Get to know the humanity of Jesus. And He will place in your soul an insatiable hunger, an uncontrollable yearning to contemplate His face. In this longing, which it is impossible to satisfy on earth, you will often find your consolation."
