I recently heard a great homily describing the season of Advent as a season of "attention." The priest mentioned that attending to something isn't always easy. In fact, we use the phrase, "Pay attention," which implies that it costs us something.
Sometimes, however, attending is easy. When we enjoy something or look forward to what is coming, we pay better attention!
"Attention is desire; it is the desire for light, for truth, for understanding, for possession...the promise or anticipation of joy is what arouses the effort of attention..." (Caldecott, Beauty in the Word)
This Advent, we look forward with great hope and anticipation for the coming of Jesus. Let us focus our desires here, and attend to the wonder and joy of this holy season.
