So there we were in about the sixth round of the Theology Bowl. The eight children are seated in the chair corresponding to their grade level. I draw names and call up the contestants. Father Kipper is asking the questions. The questions vary in difficulty according to the grade level of the recipient. The first-grade question, “What did Mary say when the angel asked her to be the Mother of God?” There was a moderately long pause. The audience was quiet, instructed not to give away the answers. Everybody is thinking……it’s OK, just say “yes”. The seven-year-old voice comes alive ever so gently in the microphone, “Be it done to me according to Your Word.”
Smiles erupt on every face, and Father says, with a smirk on his face, “I guess we will take that.”
You have to love that! This morning I asked his mom if they pray the Angelus at home. (The second phrase of the Angelus is, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord…. Be it done to me according to Your Word.”) Mom said, “No, I guess he pays attention to Scriptures.” I think his years in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Atrium also matter. Whatever the cause, something very good is at work in his soul and the souls of all our children. This week during Catholic Schools Week, we celebrate the work of the Lord in our school, and in schools throughout this great land. Come Holy Spirit. And thank you to all who make our school possible, and there are so many. One of the five essential marks of a Catholic School is “Animated by Communion and Community.” We are feeling the goodness this week, especially!
