One of my favorite parts of the day is greeting the children in the morning--parents, too. Schools are about children. We must never forget God’s little ones as we pursue our mission. Sometimes out front in the morning drop-off line, I wonder whether to open the car door for the children to get out. It’s just a little thing, but sometimes it feels awkward not to. I’d like to tell you why I generally don’t open the door. Occasionally I find the cars stopped, but they are not quite ready to unload. A student and parent are engaged in a conversation, and I interrupt if I open the door. The Good Lord knows it is very good for parents and children to talk! Other times the little ones are very capable of opening the door and doing so fosters their independence. Sometimes when adults do things for kids, like when I open the door, it implies that they are not capable of doing so. It may be stretching it a little bit, but we want to help kids when they need help but helping them when they don’t need help can create a spirit of entitlement and that’s often not very pretty. So, car doors... it’s a very minute part of the day, but it, too, can be formative.
God bless,
