While I don’t consider myself much of a trickster, there’s something about April Fools Day that brings out a bit of ornery in many of us.
Here’s a special announcement yesterday April 1 at dismissal time:
“Squirrels are everywhere it seems in our neighborhood. They were the inspiration at an SFA meeting last night where it was decided that the mascot needed to be changed to something that flows better with us here at St. Teresa. Just then a group of squirrels ran by and were the inspiration for the 8-2 vote to change our mascot to the St. Teresa Squirrels. This change is effective immediately. Order forms for new spirit wear will go home later this week, and we have already ordered a Squirrel mascot suit for our new St. Theresa Squirrels. Happy April Fool’s Day Joke! I do have to say that about the time I got to the mascot line at the end I couldn’t hold it together any longer and burst into laughter. Mr. Hirsch in the office did not help with his snickering...he later said halfway through he thought, “This is nuts," and he couldn’t restrain his snickering.
On the way out I proclaimed, “Go Squirrels!” to the children and the humor was renewed. A few kids in the middle grades said, “I was really getting worried, I didn’t want to be Squirrels.”
Today at the flagpole we touched briefly on “good jokes and humor”. For a joke to be acceptable for us Christians, both parties must see it as fun. The short message closed with two examples:
- Some 8th graders asked permission to “fill their room” with balloons to play a trick on their teacher. When 8th graders take initiative to do such a thing and ask permission, my answer will be yes if at all possible...they also popped the balloons after school and cleaned up the remnants. Well done!
- “How many of you enjoyed the “Squirrel Joke” yesterday?” Pretty much all of the hands went up along with many smiles. Was anyone injured or offended? Nope – Good joke.
Our curriculum takes many slants, let’s call this one a good lesson on humor at a cost to no one. Sometimes school is quite enjoyable! God bless us all, even and especially during Lent. (In full transparency, the seed for the idea was brought to me by Sister Mary Clare, a spirited comrade of mine.)
