It recently came to our attention that in the 2026-2027 school year, Lincoln Public Schools have chosen to have school in session on Good Friday, so that they can take a different Friday off of school, in honor of Arbor Day. As we were talking about this among the Sisters, Sister Teresa Marie quipped, "They've got the wrong tree!" How true this is!
I’m not suggesting we cut down trees without cause, nor am I suggesting we begin to excessively waste paper. I find trees are very beautiful, and green is my favorite color because of the greenery of trees and other plants in nature. However, we can go to a bit of an extreme—especially if we’re losing sight of the Tree that is the cause of our salvation.
How easily we can slip into idol worship! We might not have to cut down a tree that is being worshipped like an idol as St. Boniface did, but are there other things/people/areas of our life that can become idols?
What is the remedy for this tendency to place our trust in things or people other than God? Just as in the Old Testament the Israelites gazed upon the bronze serpent lifted up in the desert as a remedy for the deadly bites, we can gaze upon the True Cross as a remedy for sin.
In these last few days of Lent, may we make a renewed commitment to contemplate the Cross, and our Savior who hangs there out of love for each one of us.
