Is it too early to have reminders of Christmas? Whether it's walking through Hobby Lobby or watching the Aurora Borealis, there are many signs of Christmas all around us. The other day I was on a walk, and noticed through the windows of several houses, Christmas trees in their glory, lit up and blazing into the darkness outside. I had to do some mental calculations: What day is it, anyway? Did I suddenly miss the month of November? Nope, we haven't even hit the halfway mark yet.
Seeing the tree lit up filled me with a spark of hope and longing for Christ's coming. Perhaps part of it was being grateful that the goblins, witches and skeletons were coming down, but it was more than that.
In the past I've often been reticent about Christmas decorations going up too early. I love the beauty of the Advent season and its focus on waiting and preparation for Jesus' birth. The liturgy in particular helps us to prepare for Christmas, where every prayer, antiphon and reading is chosen especially for this purpose.
I started wondering, "Is it ever too early to long for Christ's coming?"
What if the things around us: trees, particles hitting earth's magnetic field or the items in a craft store all reminded us of Jesus and His coming? This is part of what it means to live with a sacramental vision. Each one of these things can remind us of His coming to us in humility, His abiding presence for all eternity, His being the Light and Hope of the world.
May each of our hearts long for Christ's coming: In history at Jesus' birth, in mystery at each Mass, and in majesty in the final days.
