When my younger sister and I were growing up, we liked to prove that we were tough. We'd try to outdo each other in carrying the most firewood, eating the spiciest food, rolling up our sleeves to flex our muscles...we probably learned all of this from our older brothers.
While we are trying to instill a certain "toughness" and resilience in our students, is it always necessary to be the strong one?
I think we can take an example from our Lord. "Jesus, though He was in the form of God, did not deem equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, He emptied Himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness, and found human in appearance, He humbled Himself... (Philippians 2:7-8)."
God, the almighty and strong one, chose to become weak and small for us. When we encounter our weakness, our littleness, perhaps it is an invitation to unite ourselves to the weakness and littleness of Jesus, coming to Him full of trust.
And yes, we can grow in our capacity to endure trials that make us stronger--living by His strength, and not our own.
