On Monday the Garage Bands from the 6
th-8
th co-curriculars performed here at school as a rehearsal for the performance at Tabitha next week. Later that night many of the same children sang for the Holy Hour at the Newman Center. A bit more on each.
All students in the middle school grades are in music. Not only were all in the Garage Bands, but many sang as well as played instruments. The students named their bands: Two Directions, Back Street Girls, Denim Divas, Unemployed, The Force. When such events are “all play” you get a variety of gifts, both in quantity and quality. A good time was had by all, and we learned with a little coaching to be a great audience. It was a great way to give vent to the desire to perform on the part of some, and to step up and have to perform for others. I think we also had the antidote to perfectionism, as it was well done, but not polished. For the time invested the children did a great job.
Newman Center – picture the beauty of the chapel, Jesus exposed in the monstrance. The acoustics in the chapel highlighted the voices and instruments which were beautifully balanced and harmonized. Our students joined St. Joseph School students to make up the choir. They had each practiced separately but had little time to sing together prior to the holy hour. You’d never have known. It was inspirational, peaceful, Catholic.
In the same day we had a variety of Golden Oldies followed later by sacred music. What a contrast. Recently I read in an article from Memoria Press that a good school educates children to be comfortable dining at a fine restaurant, and also to survive on a remote island. Apply that to music and that’s what we had in the same half day. When we are comfortable with refinement and elegance, as well as simple fun and teamwork, we are on the right track.
Thank you, Lord, for what you are doing here at St. Teresa. Keep the graces flowing please and help us to receive them well.
